Wearing Hair on a Vacation

Long time no post! And Sam and Jessica, I know I owe you an email, too. Just a quick note to say I’m off for a short vacation – and look what I have to pack! All of my hair-loss friends cautioned me that you must always leave home with a backup. So, here’s you’ll see the topper piece I normally wear (right), pool/beach/who gives a crap hair (left), and my old Milan (my first topper). I never wear Ms. Milan as she’s a bit too short and golden, but she lays so nicely that I thought I’d give her a whirl since I’m amongst strangers. That’s what vacation is for, right? I almost wish I had some topper that was completely out of the norm to play with while I’m gone!

For the pool topper, I plan to wear it up with a big, stretchy hair band. It might get a little wet, but that’s ok. The nice thing about all this hair trial-and-error is that you always have back up pieces for situations like these.

Catch you all in a few days!

P.S. If you happen to notice the Batman undies in the top left corner…um, those aren’t mine. Just so you know.

Taking Hair on Vacation

  1. That’s so true, I really felt that the human hair toppers were an unruly “mop” as you say..great choice of word! I now know realize that I should have gone with one..as I have a new hair stylist, who’s very encouraging in the false hair dept. She would have been able to cut and customize the HH topper for me. I will probably go for one the next time, just to have a choice.
Let us know how it goes with the tape instead of clip solution. Does the tape stick to your bio hair?
The Ellen Willie wig I have is called Prado Deluxe color Nougat rooted..I just looked it up on the box..
It’s a great style, and color..very much like my own hair in a “wishful thinking” technicolor dream!
The color is a highlighted light brown..a gorgeous shade..
BTW how did the holidays go with wearing your hair full time while your folks were visiting?

    • Holidays went fine. My parents actually go to bed quite early so I only had to extend my normal daily wear by a few hours, so not too bad.

The color of your Ellen Wille sounds amazing – I’ve never heard of the Prado Deluxe, I’ll have to check it out!

  2. Hi love this site so much..
I bought a wig, as I have hair loss for many years due to a thyroid problem that’s of decades duration..but I was finally diagnosed 5 years ago.. Anyway, now to the wig, I tried toppers but they look so bulky somehow..I have naturally fine hair. The toppers I tried had too much bulk. The wig I bought is a synthetic Ellen Willie..it looks great, in pics it looks just like my real hair..I still haven’t had the courage to wear it out..but I will..
My question is: is human hair preferable to synthetic, logically I thought so..but my hair stylist tells me that human hair is very high maintenance, and synthetic is more natural looking in many cases..and much easier to an manage obviously..
Have any of you tried human hair and returned to synthetic, or vice versa?

    • What Ellen Wille do you have?

HH can be high maintenance, yes. You can make synthetic very natural looking, but I wouldn’t say as a rule of thumb it is MORE natural looking since many pieces need a bit of work right out of the box to make them your own. But, they come with a style which looks more appealing than a mop of human hair that needs to be cut and styled, if that makes sense.

I know many ladies who switch between the two, especially shifting towards synthetic on rainy days or in humid months. I also know many who start with synthetic and shift to human hair exclusively, and vice versa.

Hopefully some will chime in here 🙂

  3. Oh girl, if you only knew how much your blog means to me! All the sites I have found on hair loss are negative. They focus so much on what is happening to them – always stressing themselves out looking for a new treatment that might or might not work. Instead, they should be focusing on what they can change, at least until one of their other methods work. I have woken up at 3am in full on panic attacks, sweat pouring down my body, worried about my hair loss. The funny thing is I didn’t notice myself losing a lot of hair before, I just suddenly noticed my hair was much thinner, like half of what I used to be (and it was already thin before), one day. You could see bald spots on the back of my head! After I googled what it was, all hell broke loose, it’s PCOS related i’m sure, I have all the symptoms and they came at the same time: facial hair, weight gain, fatigue. And it happened at a time when I was eating bd and not exercising, and stressing myself out a lot. Suddenly, I started seeing tons of hair loss after my freak out. I don’t know if I just completely missed the hair loss before and didn’t pay attention, or if the stress of seeing my hair loss/minaturization made me stress out so much that I induced TE hair loss on top of AGA. Its all confusing. I had hair loss when I worked out too much while eating too little, but it stopped and stabilized for several years. I think my workout got easier over the years so that probably helped. The weird thing is when I stopped exercising the hair loss came back. So no matter what I do the hair loss comes: work out too much, or too little. I guess it come down to balance. If anyone has experienced anything like this pleas let me know what helped you. Also, thank you so much for this blog, i really is motivating and keeping my horrible thoughts of not wanting to live this way at bay. I think our brains make things so much worse then they really are. Yes, hair loss is terrifying, but we are lucky to live in a age where it is concilable.

  4. Hi, Can you do one post about routine life in topper?? I have one HH topper from local vendor. Its nice, except it moves a lot. and I am afraid to use it for running or jogging or even for Yoga. Can you share your experiences with daily routine in topper??any precautions to be taken to minimize further damage to bio hair??
My jon renau topper will come within a week. why did you switch to milan noriko from jon renau??? I thought JR is better one.

  5. I want to thank you for this blog and what I have learned! I found you somewhere in my search on thinning hair and how to deal with it. I am so relieved to find out about the Bumble and Bumble hair powder – it makes all the difference in the world to me! And now I know about toppers and wigs…that will be the next step. THANK YOU!! for being brave and sharing all this.

  6. Hi Lauren

I’m in the process of getting my first topper and have found your blog and photos so helpful! I’m really liking the look of Jon Renau Top Notch, just waiting on color samples to arrive before I make my choice. It’s all a bit scary, but reading your posts has given me the courage to make this step. Hope you’re having a lovely holiday!

  7. Hi Lauren,
I am anxious to hear how your vacation went and how wearing hair worked! Hope you had a great time! It’s always nice to get away. Happy Mother’s Day to you!
